Methodology

Our value stocks screener follows the classic Benjamin Graham and Warren Buffett framework: we require a trailing P/E below 15, a price-to-book ratio under 3, and a return on equity above 15%. Those three cutoffs filter out companies priced for growth while keeping only businesses that actually produce returns on their capital base. The result is a list of reasonably priced, profitable companies — the starting point for any value investor who wants to pay less than fair price for ownership of a cash-generating business.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a stock a value stock?

Value stocks trade at low valuations relative to fundamentals — typically P/E below 15 and P/B below 3 — while still being profitable (ROE above 15%). The idea is to buy a dollar of assets for 70 cents.

Are value stocks risky?

Value stocks are not riskier than growth stocks as a group; academic evidence (Fama-French) shows value has historically outperformed. The main risk is a value trap: a cheap company that keeps getting cheaper because its fundamentals are deteriorating.

How often is this list updated?

The underlying data refreshes daily for the top 500 US stocks by market cap. Ratios are calculated from the most recent TTM (trailing twelve months) financial statements.
